ISLAMABAD — Shipping containers placed across Islamabad ahead of planned political protests have reportedly created a rental bill of around Rs. 28 crore.
Why were containers deployed?
The containers were placed on key roads and entry points to restrict movement and protect sensitive areas. The measures were introduced ahead of planned opposition demonstrations.
Impact on transport and cargo
Transport representatives said hundreds of commercial containers were taken into police custody. Some were carrying commercial cargo, creating financial losses and supply-chain disruption.
Separate reports said some detained containers carried medicines and other essential goods for Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi later directed authorities to release containers carrying medicines and their vehicles.
Financial impact
The reported rental cost adds a direct expense to the government’s security measures. Container seizures have also created further concerns for transporters whose vehicles and cargo remain affected.
